A longer block for deep work

A 50 minute session is a popular choice for deep work and study, often followed by a 10 minute break so the whole cycle fits neatly into an hour. It also matches the length of many lessons, tutorials and meetings.

Because 50 minutes is a long time to keep track of, the ring shows at a glance how much is left, and the tab title updates every second so you can check it from another window.

Getting the most from 50 minutes

Decide what "done" looks like before you start, turn off notifications and keep a notepad nearby for stray thoughts. When the alarm sounds, take a proper break; a 10 minute timer is ideal. Prefer shorter rounds? The Pomodoro timer lets you set your own focus and break lengths.

Fifty minutes leaves ten minutes of every hour for a break, which many people find easier to sustain across a whole day than a full hour. Copy link lets you bookmark the timer or share it with colleagues, and Repeat starts the next block for you if you prefer to pace your own breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50 minutes too long to focus?

For many people it works well for deep work once they're warmed up. If you find yourself drifting, try 25 minute rounds instead.

Can I change it to 45 or 55 minutes?

Yes. Drag the ring back or forward and it snaps to whole minutes, or type the time into the Custom boxes.

Will it keep running if I switch tabs or lock my screen?

Yes. The timer works from your device clock, so it stays accurate in a background tab, and the tab title shows the time left. If your phone locks, the countdown carries on, but some phones delay sound until you unlock, so keep the screen on for anything important.
